Presumably this is deliberate, since Austin Wright has no trouble making us care about Susan and Edward. Nonetheless, it clearly does lack something: one cares deeply about Tony's predicament, but Tony himself leaves one cold. Edward's novel (a bleak, relentless thriller whose discomfortingly unheroic hero - the Tony of the title - sets out to avenge the violent deaths of his wife and daughter) not only takes up most of "Tony and Susan" but is exciting and persuasive enough to stand on its own. Is Edward sincere in his request for criticism, or has he sent Susan his novel out of a subtle desire for revenge because she never believed in him as a writer? Some readers may find such questions academic.
